Leave Policies and Women¡¯s Career Interruption in the Segmented Labor Market
Huh Soo-Yeon

Abstract
This study aims to examine the effects of maternity leave and parental leave on women¡¯s career interruption and whether these effects are different according to women¡¯s status in the labor market. Using Mistry of Gender Equality and Family¡¯s Survey on Economic Activities of Career-break Women in 2016, 392 women who have married since 2010 and had been employed as full time workers before marriage were selected for the analysis. Cox regression hazard analysis reveals that when women could use maternity leave easily, hazard rate of career interruption was significantly low. This effect, however, continued only when they were employed in small-medium sized companies. Also, when women actually used maternity leave or parental leave after their child birth, hazard rate of career interruption was significantly low. This effects continued regardless company sizes they belonged. With these results, policies to support women¡¯s leave use were suggested.
